It’s 1878, you’re in a tropical forest in Jaipur, northwestern India. Everything feels normal to you except that you have not caught the scent of another of your kind in days. You keep walking hoping to catch the smell of another tiger, because you want to know you are not alone. You want to know you are not the last of your kind. What you can smell – but you cannot see – is something like burnt flesh; the foul stench that happened once when a wild boar was struck by lightning.
