Poppy seeds - both the Papaver rhoeas and Papaver somniferum varieties - are remarkably resilient and patient. They can wait for decades for the right conditions before germinating. As the 4th Earl of Perth wrote after seeing the site of the Battle of Landen in 1694: "During many months after, the ground was strewn with skulls and bones of horses and men, and with fragments of hats, shoes, saddles, and holsters. The next summer the soil, fertilised by 20,000 corpses, broke forth into millions of scarlet poppies."
